LEVEL 1 TECHNICIAN

A level 1 rope access technician shall be capable of performing a limited range of rope access tasks required by his or her employers, under the supervision of an IRATA level 3 rope access technician.

He/she is:

  • responsible for inspections of all his/her own personal rope access equipment;
  • able to assist in rigging and non-standard operations, under the guidance of a higher grade;
  • able to undertake a rescue involving descent by him/herself and have a knowledge of hauling systems.

NOTE:    A level 1 rope access technician is not allowed to supervise others

PRE-TRAINING REQUIREMENTS : fitness & health

Candidates shall be at least 18 years of age at the start of the course.

Candidates should be physically fit and unaffected by any disability or medical condition that may prevent them from working safely. They shall ensure that they have an adequate level of fitness, are physically able to perform the tasks expected in terms of strength, agility and co-ordination.

Candidates are required to certify that they do not have any medical disabilities or contraindications that may prevent them from working safely.

LEVEL 2 TECHNICIAN 

This is an experienced rope access Technician who is able to perform more complex tasks under the supervision of a Level 3 rope access safety supervisor.

He/she is:

  • able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required of Level 1;
  • capable of more complex rigging, including re-belays, deviations and tensioned lines;
  • able to undertake rescues from a variety of situations;
  • able to assemble and implement hauling systems.

PRE-TRAINING REQUIREMENTS : fitness & health

Candidates applying to upgrade shall be competent in all practical and theory requirements of their current level prior to attendance of an upgrade course e.g. an existing Level 1 attending a Level 2 course shall be capable of performing all Level 1 techniques and answering Level 1 theory questions prior to the start of a Level 2 course.

Candidates who are not competent at their existing level may require additional training. As little time is available on upgrade courses for refresher training, pre-course evaluation is recommended to verify the candidates’ current level of competence.

Candidates seeking to upgrade shall ensure that:

  • their current certification is still valid on the day of assessment;
  • they have the necessary 1 years’ experience and 1000 working hours recorded and signed off in their logbook.
IRATA Rope Access student

Rope access Technicians who are upgrading or revalidating shall provide their logbooks to the IRATA International trainer member company at the start of the training course.

NOTE: For the avoidance of confusion, 1 year’s experience means a Technician is eligible for upgrade assessment on the calendar day one year and one day after their previous assessment. E.g. 1st April 2014 Level 1 assessment, 2nd April 2015 earliest possible L2 assessment

LEVEL 3 TECHNICIAN 

This is an experienced rope access Technician who is responsible for understanding and implementing the rope access procedures, method statements and associated risk assessments, and:

  • is able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required of Levels 1 and 2;
  • understands the elements and principles of IRATA International’s safe system of work;
  • is conversant with relevant work techniques and legislation;
  • 1000 hours and 12 months of documented industrial rope access experience as a Level II Technician or equivalent (1000 hours total). 
  • has an extensive knowledge of advanced rope access rigging and rescue techniques;
  • holds an appropriate and current first-aid certificate.

NOTE:    A level 1 rope access technician is not allowed to supervise others
