IOSH - Safety Management in the Rope Access and Work at Height Industry 19th - 20th September 2022

Aims:

To establish a benchmark health and safety competence for those Managers and Supervisors who are responsible for rope access and work at height projects. The course aims to address those areas of competence that are detailed in the IRATA ICOP and ISO 22846, and that are not currently addressed by the IRATA Level 3 training scheme. Particular emphasis will be on planning work, to ensure that candidates are meeting their legal requirements and can follow established best practice.

Prior knowledge:

• Level 2 Rope access;
• or, a manager or supervisor with at least 3 years industrial work at height experience

Objectives:

• Develop candidate understanding of relevant legislation
• Develop a working knowledge of Plan, Do, Check, Act management framework
• Develop a working knowledge of work at height hazards
• Develop candidate ability to recognise common hazards and apply suitable control measures
• Develop candidate ability to analyse a range of work at height situations and create the ALARP work solution

4. Work at height in practice: selection of methods and developing a safe method of work (Plan/Do)
5. Managing the work (Do)
6. Reviewing the effectiveness of workplace safe system of work arrangements (Check)
7. Continual improvement (Act)

Assessment method:

Formative assessment:

will be used throughout the course, with candidates completing exercises and tasks in the student workbook, and being provided with ongoing feedback to help candidates identify their strengths and weaknesses.

Summative assessment:

 Student learning and the award of certificate will be evaluated using a combination of written paper and practical exercises:

• A written paper covering all modules will be conducted at the end of the course (the questions will be short format questions including multiple choice, drag and drop,missing word)
• Hazard identification exercises using examples from or near to the training venue and/or photographs of typical worksites
• Risk assessment exercise including the quantitative assessment of different control measures to assess the ALARP measure (in accordance with the Work at Height Regulations) using examples from or near to the training venue and/or photographs of typical worksites
• Developing a safe method of work (based on the method evaluated as ALARP in the risk assessment exercise)
